ugly game

stupidity

Round 1, Eastern wrap up

By snake at 1:16 am on May 7, 2006 | No comments

Round 1, Eastern wrap up
Detroit 4-1 Milwaukee

“A team like Detroit, you can’t have spurts of seven, eight minutes not playing well because they’re using those mistakes; they’re using them for break points. “  –Toni Kukoc, Milwaukee forward, who won three championships with the Chicago Bulls

“You think you’re playing well, then you look at the score and you’re like, ‘We’re down 15.’ That’s the sign of playing a good team. At times, we just have mental lapses. Most teams do, but good teams really don’t. That’s the difference.”  –Mo Williams, Milwaukee guard.

Miami 4-2 Chicago

New Jersey 4-2 Indiana

Cleveland 4-2 Washington

Lakers! Lakers!

Kobe

Q: You’ve been involved in a lot tight-finish games, do you remeber any like this?
A: No. I was telling the guys earlier, when we in the lockroom, I’ve been in a lot playoff battles, but I have never had one quite like this, you know, with back against the wall, seeming out of it, we just battled back and gained this W. We talked about that we matured ten or fifteen years today. We did a lot of grow-up in this game.

Q: Kobe, is that like twelve shining moments in one moment?
A: (laughing), you know, it’s a heart-fall game, and I am sure they are gonna play the shot over and over, but the thing people must understand is that shot won’t even be possible if it wasn’t Smush Parker’s great play, defensively. I mean, that guy struggled all night, and he stood up and made a huge defensive play, and Luke Walton made a defensive play. Devean Geroge coming off the bench made big shots. Lamar basically put us on his back and carried us all the way to the end of this game, and I just shot a 15-foot. Give credits to these guys that how well they played today.

Q: Kobe, would you decribe what’s going through your mind from the tip-off to the final seconds?
A: I knew Luke gonna control the tip, and I was going through my calculation and looked at the clock, and kind played the moment over my head. Before I got the ball, I was just thinking about how much time I need to operate. Once I got it, I just took my time, and got the look I wanted.

Q: Kobe, have you gotten the chance yet to take a look at your shot?
A: Yes, I’ve seen it. It was playing in the lockroom. We had the chance to look at it. (some training coach’s name) was in there and looked at it with me; and he said I can’t remember how many times I was seeing you took that shot in the summer in the practice. Abviously, I’ve taken that shot over and over and over again, so just follow the routine of it.

Q: What about the lay-up at the end of regulation?
A: (laughing) The lay-up is a bit tough than the shot actually, because those shots are typically the hardest ones to make. I saw, I think it’s Boris Diaw coming to help. You know, from the corner of my eye, I saw he’s coming to block the shot, so I knew I had to put a little bit arc of the ball, (in order to) get over his finger tips.

Q: The shot at the end of regulation, you talked about you were measuring the time. For the last shot in the overtime, how much of the time you got?
A: Well, I’ve been a lot of situations where in that type of scenario I failed, trying to get to basket and doing too much. So I called back some of my past experiences, and learned that once I got the ball, I just need to survey the floor, not rush it. I looked at the clock and knew I had enough time. So I had to catch and turn and look and see what’s going on, where the defense is flowing, and then take it from there.

Q: Kobe, on the game-winning shot, is that the most emotional you felt after the game-winning shot in your career?
A: Oh yes, just becasue the difference is in the past, people expected us to win these games. So hitting those shots was almost like a relief. The difference today is nobody expected us to do anything against this team. Being the playoffs, like I just said, we are such a young team, for them to be a part of it, for us to be a part of it, that just really made it speacial.

Q: So you said this is the biggest shot you ever hit?
A: It was the most fun shot I have ever hit, definitely. You know, it’s just because it’s us. You know what I mean. Us, as a union, enjoy the moment together, with the entire city of LA. It’s fun.

Q: Do you like this new version of Kobe Bryant where you differ yourself a lot?
A: I love it. It’s more fun. It’s more exciting, to see, you know, Lamar, like I said, Lamar just put us on his back. It’s him who carried us and got us to that point. He was making all those plays; he was in the post and passing out of the double-team. You know, guys stepped up and hit big shots. Sasha stepped up and made big shots. It’s more exciting, seeing smiles in their faces, how much they enjoy the game. Kwame Brown also stepped up. It’s fun, man.

Q: Are you gonna continue…
A: Why not? I hope so. Seriously, it’s fun, this is fun. The game is so much more fun to play in this way. You know, just so much more enjoyable, so much more exciting. We just had a bless.

Q: Then why didn’t you play like this in the regular season?
A: It’s a revolution. Phil and I both knew that during the cause of whole season, there were times I had to score a lot. So we understood the flow of the game, and he knew they are ready and he came to me and said, this is the type of strategy we are gonna use in these series. He’s right and we are playing extremely well.

Q: What did you say to Smush after you took the shot at the end of regulation?
A: It was all him. This is you. This is you being the warrior. He came out here and had a tough shooting night, but you hanging there. And I just want him know how much I appreciate that, how much we appreciate that. Without him hanging in there and not quit and made that big play, that gives us an opportunity to extend the game. So I just wanted to let him how much that meant to me.

Q: Can you compare this to those years when people thought that you should win and did win? Do you think this is the most enjoyable playoff experience?
A: It was fun right on the top. We are just so young and we are just excited to be here and just play. It’s just a different feeling all together. From everybody expected us to win a championship to nobody expected us to be in the playoffs, to, you know, Phoenix expected to sweep us.

Q: When was the specific time do you think when all the players started to understand the triangle offense?
A: I think if you looked through the end of the regular season, that’s when we really started to know how’s the flow of the game working. That’s when things started to come together a little bit.

Q: Kobe, how does this compare to Robert Horry in the Sacramento series?
A: It’s different. You know, people expected us to win that series. Everybody were walking around and said you guys are really suck, you underachieve. He hit that shot and it’s such a relief. Thanks for digging us out. Tonight’s shot is just pure excitement.

Q: Is this more fun than winning title was?
A: What? This is a big step for us on a journey towards, you know, trying to get to championship level. This is very important game for us, like I said, we really grow up today.
